Think back to where you were nearly ten years ago. 2001 is an infamous year, but you may not know it was also the year that IE 6 was released. The world has changed quite a bit. While others have given a funeral for IE 6, I want to remind us all what else happened…
- Joe Dirt, starring David Spade, was a top movie. Oh, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was big, too.
- Wiki-free content encyclopedia, goes online.
- First Apple Store opens.
- Apple Computer releases the now famous iPod.
- Enron files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
- Alexis was born (not really, but it seems like it sometimes), and I was still in college.
- In the final days of his presidency, Bill Clinton issues controversial pardons, including one for Marc Rich, billionaire fugitive financier. George W. Bush is sworn in as the 43rd president.
- Google is awarded U.S. Patent 6,285,999, for the PageRank search algorithm used in the Google search engine.
- Britney Spears was still a little sweet and innocent pop star.
- Douglas Adams, writer of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (thanks for all the fish) died.
… So why did I write this article? To show that as time wears on, technology changes, we develop more complex, interactive web applications, and through it all, we still get calls asking about IE 6 issues. The questions are dying quickly since only 4 to 8 percent of web users browse with IE 6, but it is fun to look back and think how silly it is to try and support a software that is almost 10-years-old.
